What Is Projection Mapping and How Can I Use It?

By Miguel Peguero on January 3, 2020

Event planners now have more audiovisual options than ever before, and today’s event-goers expect a production; a pipe and drape set up with a podium mic and antiquated projection systems simply won’t cut it any longer. One way event planners are making a big impact is through projection mapping. While this technology has been around for about 50 years, it was too costly for mainstream usage; however, that’s all changed, and now projection mapping is a great option for a variety of events.

What Is Projection Mapping?

Projection mapping, sometimes referred to as spatial augmented reality or video mapping, is the use of technology to turn anything into an interactive display. There are two forms of projection mapping:

2D projection mapping

This involves projecting images onto a flat surface, such as a building wall or screen. While perhaps not as immersive as 3D projection mapping, it still requires a high level of skill as the technology operator must line up the edges of the beams from multiple projectors while coordinating content so that it appears as one seamless image.

3D projection mapping

Rather than simply project an image on a flat canvas, 3D projection mapping allows imagery to be projected onto irregularly shaped three-dimensional objects, wrapping around them and molding to their shape. 3D projection mapping is, of course, more expensive, as it requires a lot more effort on the part of the design team working with the object. Wondering how does projection mapping work? Typically, it begins with a pre-production process in which images are fitted onto a 3-D graphic model of the object to be projected upon. 3D projection mapping can, and has, been used on landscapes and landmarks, vehicles, food products, clothing and shoes, stages, entire buildings, and even people. In a YouTube video from Projection Mapping Central (PMC), a community resource for all things projection mapping, you can see some amazing examples of the technology in use, on everything from the Sydney Opera House to Jennifer Lopez’s dress. Check out the video here!

If you just viewed the video, you’ve now seen just how projection mapping can enhance an image using graphics to make an illusion come to life, truly engaging the audience. It’s a huge step up from the sometimes mind-numbing presentations and performances of the past!

Benefits of Projection Mapping

As mentioned earlier, today’s event-goers expect a show! That’s why musical performers continually up their game with each tour. For many artists, it’s simply no longer enough to get up on stage and sing. The excitement projection mapping creates has also made it a staple at retail promotions, fashion shows, sporting events, and product launches. Today, it has made its way to the corporate world.

Whereas a droning speaker and a PowerPoint presentation can quickly lose the attention of an audience and test their patience, creatively engineered projection mapping has the ability to engage an audience in a unique way, telling a story and delivering a visual message that’s memorable (after all, a study by the Visual Teaching Alliance found that after three days, people retain only 10-20% of written or spoken information but almost 65% of visual information).

Using Projection Mapping

To create an awe-inspiring projection mapping experience, event planners work with event production companies that utilize special projection mapping software such as Lightform that turns any surface into a wall of wonder. To make the most of projection mapping, you should start by answering a few important questions:

  • What is your event budget?
  • What is the size of your venue?
  • How many attendees are you expecting?
  • What type, and how many, projection mapping effects do you want?
  • Is 2D a good cost-saving option?

Of course, if you work with a reputable company like One Way Event Productions, we can walk you through the process and brainstorm ideas. If you’re curious how much does projection mapping cost, you can request a quote, and we will do our best to work within your budget.
